A WBB-based posturography system included three standardized assessment protocols: the modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction on Balance (mCTSIB), the Limits of Stability (LOS), and the Rhythmic Weight Shift (RWS) (see Supplementary Material for additional details). The mCTSIB is a simplified version of the Sensory Organization Test that can be carried out using fixed force plates. The test can detect the presence of sensory impairments by analyzing COP motion during quiet stance under four different conditions: eyes opened and closed on a flat surface, and eyes opened and closed on foam. Outcome measures of this test are the speed and the maximum excursion of the COP in the medial-lateral and anterior–posterior axis. The LOS test quantifies maximum displacement of the COP in eight directions while the plantar surface of the feet remains in contact with the platform. Directional control is assessed as a ratio between the extent of movement in the intended direction and the total amount of movement. The outcome measures of this test are the maximum distance and directional control in each direction. Finally, the RWS assesses the ability to rhythmically move the COP in the medial-lateral (ML) and anterior–posterior (AP) planes at three different speeds. The outcome measure of this test was the directional control in both planes at the different speeds.

1. ¿What is a posturography test?
A posturography test is a clinical test that assesses standing balance under different
conditions with increasing levels of difficulty. The test assesses the sensory and motor
strategies used to maintain balance in different contexts and activities.

2. ¿What do I need to use the application?
In order to use the posturography application, you’ll need: 1) a standard PC running
Windows™ OS (from XP in advance); 2) Bluetooth connectivity; 3) the peripheral
Nintendo® Wii Balance Board™; 4) a foam surface.
The foam surface used in the definition of the healthy patterns in each exercise had a
thickness of 8 cm and a density of 24.84 kg/m3
. The feet were placed according to a
template that can be found at the end of this document. The template can be printed
and fixed to the Wii Balance Board™.
If your PC hasn’t Bluetooth connection, you can buy a Bluetooth dongle in your favourite
store. The Wii Balance Board™ is usually available in videogame stores. For further

3. ¿Does it run on other OS such as Mac or Linux?
Unfortunately, the application has been developed for Windows™ and currently, it is only
available for this OS.

4. ¿Is this application free?
The Neurorehabilitation and Brain Research Group, funded by Fundación Mapfre and by
project NeuroVR (TIN2013-44741-R) of the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad
(Madrid, Spain), have developed and clinically validated the Wii Balance Board™-based
posturography test, and are happy to freely distribute it.

5. I can’t connect the Wii Balance Board™, ¿what can I do?
If you have followed the guidelines to connect this device to your PC and it still doesn’t
work, we suggest you to ask for help to a trustworthy IT guy or to look for information
online.

6. ¿Are the data confidential?
The application won’t register any name or personal data that can identify any user. The
results of the test will be, consequently, confidential. The data collection satisfies the
Spanish Ley Orgánica 15/1999 de Protección de Datos de Carácter Personas (LOPD).

7. ¿Is this application clinically validated?
The clinical validation of the Wii Balance Board-based posturography test was
determined in the Hospital NISA Valencia al Mar. The system exhibited excellent
psychometric properties and sensitivity for identifying balance performance of
individuals with stroke in comparison with healthy subjects, which supports feasibility of
the system as a clinical tool. More information can be found in:
